Growing Flowers is fun!Root Viewing BoxCreate a root view box so that you can see first hand how plants form not only stem and leaves but roots as well. Simply cut off the top of a half-pint milk carton and punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Then carefully cut a “window” in the side of the carton, leaving at least a ½-inch edge around it. Next, take a clear piece of acrylic or any type of plastic (clear and stiff) and size this to fit the window. Tape the plastic to the inside of the carton and carefully fill it with soil. Plant the seeds close to the side of the window so that you can view the roots as they grow down through the soil. Moisten the soil with water and be sure to place the carton inside a shallow tray to catch any excess. |
The London Children's Flower Society has been organising gardening competitions with London's schools for more than 60 years. Our competitions are open to all Primary and Special Needs schools across the 32 London Boroughs. Our Spring Competitions encourages children to grow bulbs over the winter months with judging in February and March. Our Summer flower and School garden competitions allow children to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs from seed and either display them in pots or in the school garden. Judging takes place in June and July. A Royal Treat for the Children of Tufnell Park School in Islington Our Patron HRH the Countess of Wessex made a visit to one of our award winning schools in June 2011. The Countess toured the schools gardens and was entertained by singing and a gymnastics display. The school had only entered our competition for the first time in 2010 and were awarded the "First Time Cup" at our awards ceremony in October last year. Site news
