Growing Flowers is fun!

Root Viewing Box

Create a root view box so that you can see first hand how plants form not only stem and leaves but roots as well. Simply cut off the top of a half-pint milk carton and punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Then carefully cut a “window” in the side of the carton, leaving at least a ½-inch edge around it. Next, take a clear piece of acrylic or any type of plastic (clear and stiff) and size this to fit the window. Tape the plastic to the inside of the carton and carefully fill it with soil. Plant the seeds close to the side of the window so that you can view the roots as they grow down through the soil. Moisten the soil with water and be sure to place the carton inside a shallow tray to catch any excess.

Welcome to the London Children's Flower Society  Website

The London Children's Flower Society has been organising gardening competitions with London's schools for more than 60 years.  Our competitions are open to all Primary and Special Needs schools across the 32 London Boroughs.

Our Spring Competitions encourages children to grow bulbs over the winter months with judging in February and March.

Our Summer flower and School garden competitions allow children to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs from seed and either display them in pots or in the school garden.  Judging takes place in June and July.

A Royal Treat for the Children of Tufnell Park School in Islington

Our Patron HRH the Countess of Wessex made a visit to one of our award winning schools in June 2011.  The Countess toured the schools gardens and was entertained by singing and a gymnastics display.

HRH royal visit

The school had only entered our competition for the first time in 2010 and were awarded the "First Time Cup" at our awards ceremony in October last year.

SUMMER GROWING COMPETITION

&

SCHOOL GARDEN COMPETITION 2012

Applications for our Summer Growing and School garden Competitions will be sent out in early February.  If your school is not on our mailing list, you may still enter the competitions, please download the application form below:

Summer Competition Application

Our summer gardening competition allows children to grow the flowers, herbs and vegetables from seed.  The children have the opportunity to follow the natural process of germination, growth and production of flower or vegetable crop.  All the children taking part will receive a certificate regardless of whether they grow the plants in individual pots or collectively in the school garden or playground garden, be they in tubs, pots or window boxes.  School gardens will be judged separately provided you so indicate on the Entry Form.

Judging will take place in late June and early July when one of our volunteers will visit your school to award certificates and stickers to the children. Overall school awards will be issued in early September and for those schools which have produced excellent results there could be an invitation to our awards ceremony in October.

Planting instructions can be found on the seed packets plus we will include a general instruction leaflet with your order.  We would be delighted to receive photographs of the children and the fruits of their endeavours for possible publication.

Our seeds are supplied by Sutton’s and every packet is the standard size packet as sold in retailers across the UK but our price for individual packets is only 40p.

We look forward to receiving your application before the 28th March deadline.

Good Luck

Spring Comp Application

The London Children’s Flower Society has been running flower growing competitions for more than 60 years and with the current trend for gardening we are ideally placed to encourage school children to “have a go” and grow something.  We aim to match the needs of the schools and enhance the requirements of the national curriculum.  Here is what we will be offering this year:

·        Bulbs at very competitive prices and with free delivery

·        Plastic pots

·        Free self adhesive name labels with every pot bought

·        No entry fee for the competition

·        Email reminders for looking after your bulbs over the winter

·        Our judges will visit on a date convenient to you and award every child with

a merit certificate plus a bronze, silver or gold sticker

·        Schools can win trophies and prizes, including garden tools sets, gardening vouchers, books and educational visits to places such as Kew Gardens.

THE FINAL CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES WILL BE FRIDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2011.

NOTE: Bulbs and pots will be dispatched direct from our suppliers.  Planting instructions and sticky name labels will be sent with the order confirmation from this office.  The orders will be dealt with promptly and both ourselves and our bulb supplier will aim to avoid half term dates for delivery.

BULBS FOR THE CLASSROOM

We can supply the same bulbs for use in classrooms or school gardens.  These bulbs will not be counted as part of the competition and will therefore not be judged.

Please advertise the competition throughout your school to encourage all classes to participate.

We look forward to receiving your completed order form in due course.
